Marriage certificate A search of the overseas index at FRC found an entry in Return of Marriages in the HM 39th Regiment for 1837; William marries Mary Reardon in Madras. I sent for the certificate, it is sparse, only showing names of William & Mary, date and place.
PRO records Search for 'Reardon' families in India drew a complete blank.
Birth certificates Continued search for son William’s birth certificate. Wakefield Record Office checked parent / child combination with no success. They offered to check for William's siblings (shown on parish baptisms); they found a registration certificate for Mary born 1840: Success! Now I had details of the parents, it all fitted apart for one minor problem!
What a shock !
Daughter's birth certificate William had registered his daughter and claimed her mother was Mary REDMOUND. How was this possible, he had married Mary REARDON in India, at least that's what the marriage certificate says? This was definitely not an alternative spelling. William was literate, how had a mistake been made?
